Rosemary Markle got up from the table, took her coat from the hook on the back of the door, picked up her purse and walked slowly down the narrow flight of steps to the street below.
Outside, in the gently falling snow, she walked briskly to the corner where a taxi waited. She crawled in and sat in the middle of the back seat, her heart still pounding. When she was convinced it was safe to do so, she opened her purse, took out the bulky wallet, and began counting out the $20 bills.
